I absolutely hate keyboards, however, if you're going to get one, get one with a full keyboard and weighted keys. That being said, one of those is going to run you as much or more than an inexpensive upright piano. If you decide to go the piano route, they generally retain their value--that being said, if you really like it and want to upgrade, or if you hate it and want to get rid of it, you're around breaking even...rather than a keyboard which begins losing value faster than a computer. Lauren C-B

Without despising keyboards (or any musical instrument for that matter) I agree with the responder who advised a decent piano. If you don't like the piano sound, get yourself a small harpsichord or spinet.

If you insist on a keyboard, my advice is to ignore "features" and fancy gimmicks and go for the one with the most convincing sound, even if this means a reduced number of voices. Choose one, too, with a decent-sized keyboard with full-size keys and a range of as many octaves as possible.

Any electronic instrument sounds better, of course, through decent speakers. The ones in most keyboards are pathetic little squeakers which do nothing for the music. Michael B

buy a Casio--they are not expensive & in a little while you can always buy a better instrument
a beginners model will be under $100--for a 61 note keyboard--that is really enough to get started
yes--you can learn some what on your own-but you would do better if you had some lessons to guide you in the right direction pianojazz man

i've always despised keyboards and believe personally that nothing beats a real piano so i think it would be very wise to talk to a person about what would be best for you at a music shop.
secondly you can learn from books and self teach but you will excel for more greatly if you have a teacher and they will be able to correct any bad habits you may make in the beginning. =] Mummy•Monster
